Future-proof power supply on the event ship “Nautilus” - DEIF & Kunzlerstrom

Kunzler Notstromtechnik GmbH – Experts in safety power solutions

For more than 55 years, Kunzler has been one of Germany’s leading providers of emergency and safety power solutions. The company designs, builds, and installs backup power systems and diesel generators nationwide, covering a power range from 20 kVA to 2,500 kVA. These systems are deployed in critical environments such as hospitals, data centers, transportation systems, communication networks, and large buildings - anywhere an uninterrupted power supply is essential.

In addition to planning and installation, Kunzler offers comprehensive services for maintenance, inspection, repair, and technical upgrades - even for systems from other manufacturers. Quality, reliability, and precision are at the heart of everything they do. That’s why Kunzler has partnered closely with DEIF GmbH for around 25 years - delivering innovative control solutions and future-proof energy systems.

A long-standing partnership for innovative solutions

Kunzler is one of DEIF’s oldest customers and has completed numerous projects using state-of-the-art control technology - including the modernization of the power supply on the event ship “Nautilus” operated by Primus-Linie, which regularly cruises the Main, Rhine, and Neckar rivers.

The project: Upgrading the power supply

As part of this joint project, the “Nautilus” power system underwent a major upgrade. The goal was to make the existing technology more efficient and future-ready. Kunzler handled the complete modernization of the ship’s electrical system - from main engine control and shore power integration to installing a touch display for energy flow visualization. These measures significantly optimized the vessel’s power supply and aligned it with current technical standards.

Challenge and solution

“It’s not our core business to equip ships - but that’s exactly what made this challenge so exciting,” says Kunzler. Integrating grid switching and synchronization into an event ship’s existing system required tailor-made solutions and absolute precision. The DEIF AGC 150 controller proved to be the ideal choice - a versatile, robust, and user-friendly solution designed for demanding applications such as marine environments.

Benefits of the AGC 150 in action

  • Versatility: Multiple variants on a single hardware platform allow flexible use - from single gensets to complex systems.
  • User-Friendly: Intuitive menus in German simplify commissioning and operation.
  • Robustness: Reliable even under harsh conditions, such as those found on ships or in mobile applications.
  • Fast Availability: Optimized supply chains ensure short lead times - a clear advantage for time-critical projects.

A partnership built on trust

The long-standing collaboration between DEIF and Kunzler is based on mutual respect, reliability, and open communication. “I’m not a fan of the word ‘partnership’ - honorable business practices and commitment describe it better,” says Kunzler. DEIF impresses with technological expertise, a broad portfolio in intelligent power generation, and a willingness to meet individual requirements.

Looking ahead

Energy supply faces major challenges: growing demand driven by digitalization, e-mobility, and new heating technologies calls for innovative solutions. Kunzler and DEIF are focusing on intelligent controls, hybrid systems, and the integration of renewable energy.

“We want more energy feedback from emergency generators and their inclusion in the balancing energy market - and with DEIF, we’re well prepared for that.
